FMS: Great Difference Between Similarity
“it’s just different”

The Founder of “Free-Style Martial-Arts And Self-Defence”(FMS) is Master Tan Ghee Lip.

Master Tan has trained in various martial arts for more than 35 years. He was born on 1st September 1959 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. As a child, Master Tan was very weak and fragile. He constantly suffered from asthma and other related sicknesses.

In 1972, at the age of twelve and a half, Master Tan took up Chinese Kung Fu and Chi Gong from a master who conducted classes near his house.  It was Master Tan’s first involvement in martial arts and it was to fulfil his interest in martial arts as well as a hope to heal his asthma through Chi Gong.  He trained under the master for three years.

After a year learning Kung Fu and Chi Gong, Master Tan discovered his health had improved tremendously but he found that the art he was learning consisted mainly of deadly strikes with almost 90% hand techniques. Hence, he decided to take up another martial art that focused on leg or kicking techniques.  He chose Taekwon-Do.

Master Tan started his Taekwon-Do training in 1974 .  He stopped training in Kung Fu and Chi Gong after a year of Taekwon-Do when the master retired due to old age.  His master passed away two years later.  It was one of the saddest days in Master Tan’s life when he bade farewell to his first master in 1977.

When the Kung Fu class stopped, Master Tan joined the national gymnastic class.  He wanted to improve his flexibility i.e. in jumping, springing and falling through gymnastics.  Not one to be complacent, Master Tan further enhanced his skills and knowledge by exploring the throwing technique.  He gathered a few friends from Judo to teach him the techniques for two years.  Training with friends on the throwing and grabbing skills from Judo didn’t stop Master Tan from searching for new martial art knowledge and skills. He later joined Aikido when his Judo friends left for further studies abroad.  With his martial art background, Master Tan saved a lot of time learning the basics in Aikido.  The instructor and the seniors taught Master Tan many useful and practical lock techniques in exchange for his other martial arts skills. At that time Master Tan was already a 2nd degree black-belt holder in Taekwon-Do.  In the same year, he was learning Karate at one of his Karate friends’ dojo.

In the early 80s, Master Tan became inspired by the powerful punches from Boxing.  He was also impressed with the self-defence techniques from Hapkido.  In 1982, Master Tan was introduced to a renowned Taekwon-Do instructor in Malaysia whom he had always heard of, Master Andy Yuen.  Master Andy Yuen was one of the most pioneer instructors who trained under Korean instructors in Malaysia. He was also an ex-boxer and the first Hapkido instructor cum representative in Malaysia.  He was the only one who could provide the skills that Master Tan needed.  Since then, Master Tan began to study with Master Andy Yuen for more of the higher skills in self-defence and techniques in boxing.  The training lasted till 1984 when Master Tan had to go to Europe with his employer, the Kuwait Ambassador to Malaysia. Master Tan was then the personal bodyguard to the Kuwait Ambassador.

Half a year later, Master Tan resigned as the security in-charge for the Kuwait Ambassador to Belgium.  He began to settle down in Germany in 1985 and started to promote Taekwon-Do, the art that he never stopped practising.  During his stay in Europe in the last 16 years, Master Tan continued to observe the good techniques from other martial arts. He would comprise the good techniques from various martial arts he had observed or learnt.  He was invited to perform several demonstrations in Taekwon-Do by various local martial art schools and also to conduct seminars and classes.

In the year 2000, Master Tan moved back to Malaysia.  Upon his return, he decided to develop a form of martial art that is simple, easy-to-learn and suitable for everyone of all age. He compiled all his martial arts knowledge and the improvement of techniques with the additional of scientific principles to form “Free-Style Martial-Arts And Self-Defence”(FMS) and to make Malaysia the home ground and the world HQ for the Art.
